A tiled roof restoration is a cost-effective alternative to a full roof replacement when maintained correctly. A roof restoration involves three main stages: roof repairs, roof cleaning, and roof painting.
Stage 1: Roof Repairs
During your tiled roof restoration, your roof will be thoroughly inspected. Any broken or cracked tiles will be removed and replaced with the same tile profile. Changing these roof tiles restores structural integrity.

What is a ridge cap?
A ridge cap is a V shaped tile which sits along the highest point where two roof planes meet. The Ridge acts as a primary barrier against leaks and debris, while holding the tiles together.Â
What is repointing?
Repointing is a flexible compound that is used over the existing mortar on tiles to seal joints and secure the ridges. Creating a durable, waterproof barrier that also allows for roof movement.
The pointing process involves old, cracked mortar being cleaned off and a modern, flexible compound being applied with weep holes to the edges of the ridge caps. This allows the water to exit the ridge capping and prevents roof leaks.
Ridge repointing extends the lifespan of your roof and prevents future leaks. This needs to be carried out every 10 to 15 years.
What is Rebedding?
Re-betting is the process of removing old, deteriorated cement mortar from under the ridge capping and replacing it with new structural mortar. This acts as a foundation that secures the top ridge tiles in place. The process involves removing the existing ridge capping. The old damaged cement is then removed, and new cement bedding is applied to secure the tiles.
Re-bedding fixes any structural issues by resetting the ridge caps, ensuring that they are firmly anchored to the roof. You are a Roof requires re-bedding when the motor is visibly cracking, crumbling or falling out, which causes loose or misaligned Tiles, that may result in roof leaks.
What is the difference between re-pointing and re-bedding?
Re-bedding involves fixing the structural cement that holds the ridge caps, whereas re-pointing is the protective, flexible seal applied over that bedding. Both are equally important to each other. Although your ridges will need to be re-pointed more frequently than the re-bedding will need replacing.
Re-bedding is a much more intensive task, also more expensive in comparison to re-pointing. If you maintain your re-pointing correctly, your ridge capping re-bedding will be protected. This will extend the life of your roof and save you money.

A roof clean will remove years of buildup, dirt, moss, lichen and algae. This must be done correctly to leave the bare tile ready for priming. If a roof cleaning is not carried out correctly, the roof coating will not correctly stick to the roof and will result in peeling and lifting paint.

How to choose a roof restoration company for your tiled roof restoration.
When choosing a company for your roof restoration, you need to check for these key points to ensure a quality job. Too often customers have been burnt by Roof restoration companies who have not correctly restored their tiled roof. Although it looked great when they completed the job, their tiled roof quickly blistered and started peeling. This is a very costly process to correct, potentially resulting in a re-roof.
When choosing a roofing company, check that:

These are two separate licenses, both equally important. A Roof Tyler may not know the specifics on how to paint. A painter most likely does not understand how to correctly repair a roof.
They are not using subcontractors.Â
If they use subcontractors, they are using other roofing companies to restore your Roof. Often subcontractors have their own small roofing company and have not been trained to a specific standard. We have found it is best to go with a medium two small roofing company who has extensively trained employees. Bigger companies can market well, but if the person who is actually doing the work on your roof is not trained correctly things can go wrong. If they use subcontractors to install guard rail, Solar removal or reinstallation, that is fine. This will not affect your roof restoration.
They are using a quality product.
Without quality products, your tiled roof restoration will not last. Even if they are the best roofers that have ever existed, ensure that they are using quality products such as Dulux, Shieldcoat and Nutech. These are expensive paints, but good roofers understand in investing in quality products to ensure their customers’ tiled roof restorations stand the test of time.
They provide a written quote.
Ensure you receive a detailed written quote. Presume if it is not on the quote, it is not being done.
Avoid very cheap pricing.
As mentioned above, quality Roof paint systems are costly. If a quote is less than $5000 for an average size Roof you have to continue with caution.
